This video was made by Robert Newton a TV documentary producer whose family were in textiles in North Carolina for generations. Newton got the idea for the documentary after he found himself constantly correcting people who said that the textiles industry in NC state was dead. It’s a full blown TV documentary which lasts 30 minutes but its well worth watching.
Interfilière Hong Kong closed its doors for the 7th time on a positive note at the end of March, with a 5% increase in overseas visitors. For the 2013 show, the organiser, Eurovet, focused on bringing innovation and creativity to the show to inspire Asian and international designers and buyers. Eurovet says the show had a very high international attendance on day one which reaffirmed the importance of Hong Kong as a centre for intimates and swimwear.
On 6, 7 and 8 July 2013, 300 exhibitors and nearly 11,500 visitors will come together at Interfilière Paris, which the organisers Eurovet describe as the only trade fair to attract the highest performing international textiles for intimates and beachwear.
It’s nearly been a year since I graduated, I remember the stress and the sleepless night watching Six Feet Under but also the excitement I was going through this time last year.
As we all know, crafts have seen a huge revival in the past few years. Old, forgotten and dying skills are being taught again and many people have started making and selling their work. Websites like Etsy, where small designers or hobbyists can set up an online shop and display their creations have become very popular.
I have found it really challenging in the past few months to sit down and work on something new: as I have been freelancing for a few companies the time I spend designing is usually devoted to work.
Cesare Citterio, textiles entrepreneur and owner of Cifra SpA, a world leader in the field of seamlessly knitted garments, is a man on a mission – a warp knitting seamless mission - or as Citterio likes to call it a ‘WKS’ mission.
I discovered Rebel Yuths almost by accident as I was browsing online. Nigerian born Damier Johnson, the creative mind behind the label, moved to Italy when he was 18 with his family. I searched the Internet for as much information about the label as I could, and eventually I managed to track down Damier himself on facebook, who agreed to answer a few question for me.
It’s that time of the year when fashion week is over and I usually spend a couple of hours looking at the collections online. Since I am writing this blog, I thought it would be a good idea to write a report on my favourite catwalk shows but I really struggled to find anything that caught my attention! I thought this season there was an overload of monochrome dresses (usually black or white) in simple silhouettes.
After a hectic three days at Pitti I spent a weekend loaded with lots of great food and good Chianti with my friends in Tuscany. The following Monday I embarked on a little Italian adventure travelling through some cities in the north of Italy. Amongst other jobs, I am currently freelancing for knit-1 and I help them with their sales in Italy.
The days when eco-fashion used to be dull and boring are long gone: former art director at Hugo Boss Bruno Pieters claims it is especially essential for a luxury brand to be very particular about the provenance of their materials and the conditions of their workers.
I have been living in London since 1998 and in all this time, I have seen countless exhibitions on various subjects: London is after all an incredibly vibrant city where anything you want is pretty much round the corner.
A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of doing my first radio interview with American station Break Thru radio (www.breakthruradio.com). DJ Marie contacted me to be part of her programme “Sew and Tell”, a mix of eclectic music and interviews with emerging designers. The 72nd edition of Pitti Filati took place as usual at the Fortezza da Basso in Florence last week. Foreign buyers once again led the show, with very good turnouts from Hong Kong (+75%), Turkey (+30%)United States (+33%), Spain (+22%) and Great Britain. With a total of 3,700 buyers, the International buyer turnout stayed the same as the previous winter edition last year even though the number of actual buyers was inferior (there were about 4,000 last winter).
Last week I travelled to my beloved Tuscany to attend the latest edition of Pitti Filati. Before I enrolled at the Royal College to do my MA I had been quite eager to find a job that would allow me to travel between London and Florence so I was quite happy to be going there on business for the first time!
Leading Japanese computerized flat knitting machine manufacturer Shima Seiki has launched a fantastic new video of a fashion show, which the company put on for customers during its three day 50th Anniversary Celebration event held at its hometown in November 2012 in Japan - and it really is worth watching, both for the content and for the camera work.

Outside was snow, on snow, on snow; inside Hall 1 of Paris’ Porte de Versailles some 26,373 designers, buyers, retailers, and decision makers gathered at the January 2013 Interfilière and Salon International de la Lingerie in search of new concepts in fabrics, technologies, and brand development. Indeed, the show’s ambience seemed particularly suited to the weather, with cozy igloos and fur throws, hostess’ costumes of winter white fleece capes and boots, and trend forums featuring shimmering, sparkling, iridescent innovations.
It was show time at the Royal College of Art in London last week and as usual the very talented students of the School of Material showcased their creations during the "work in progress" show.
Leading fibres and yarn show Expofil, part of the Première Vision Pluriel collection of shows, has announced a 17% increase in the number of participants for its forthcoming edition as compared to the February 2012 show.
On January 15 and 16, Première Vision Preview New York and Indigo New York started the year off strong at their fourth combined trade show. A surge of creative energy filled the Metropolitan Pavilion and Altman Building as the world’s top mills and print design studios came together to showcase their innovative Spring/Summer 2014 collections.
I have always had a thing for landscape photography, whether some people brand it as cheesy, I really really like it.
So last week was that time of the year when I wish I was more popular and got some invitations for some fashion shows: London fashion week, menswear. I personally have always found menswear much more exciting than womenswear, it is an area that still has a great scope for innovation and experimentation.
WeConnectFashion (WCF) has been connecting fashion brands, retailers and service providers with each other and with marketplace intelligence since 1998, and now the brand has announced the launch of its innovative online Trend Shop.
I recently came across the work of Liu Fang whilst browsing online. I actually remember seeing some of her catwalk pieces when her collection was showcased in Paris last September but it is her sculptural knitwear that really caught my eye. Fang showed during Paris fashion week, a dream for most designers, as part of "China in Paris". Now on its fifth edition, this initiative aims to promote Chinese designers.
Leading Northern Italy based warp knitter Eurojersey has released its Sensitive Fabrics: Summer 2014 lingerie fabrics’ collection in preparation for the New Year’s European shows.

Flat knitting machine builder Stoll will exhibit at Knitwear Solutions, the ‘show within a show’, for flat knits launched by Premiere Vision in September this year. The show takes place at the Parc d'Expositions, Paris Nord, Villepinte from 12-14 February 2013.
We were inspired by the work of a number of the knitwear design graduates who took part in Texprint 2012, when it was showcased at Premiere Vision in Paris this September – so much so that we asked prize winner Carlo Volpi to blog for us here on Knitting Industry – Carlo Volpi’s Knit Blog.
Doing Texprint has been the highlight of my career so far, I think gaining recognition from the industry is the best pay back to many hours of hard work!
I've been working some crazy hours lately, I have a few projects on the go...I have been doing my usual job at Morley College in London teaching hand knitting and in addition to that, I have been working at Bucks New College in High Wycombe as a visiting machine knitting tutor. I think the Textiles course there, especially the knitted textiles, always produces some of the most exciting work in the country so I'm very glad to be teaching there!
Leading flat knitting machine builder Stoll has launched its latest knitwear collection entitled ‘Stoll Trend Collection Autumn/Winter 2013/2014’. The following text explains where Stoll’s designers got their INSPIRATION from and the collection can be viewed below.
In the past decade, hand knitting has had an incredible revival and many young people have taken up this old craft again. Thanks to new technologies and books, many skills have been preserved for the new generations and today knitting has a strong presence not only in craft and fashion, but art as well.
I really hate the summer in London, every year everyone hopes that we will finally get some sunshine and some decent weather but obviously that hardly ever happens...I really do like seasonal changes and I love how suddenly the air becomes pungent and loaded with new smells in autumn.
Amongst the 600+ cutting edge knitwear samples displayed at the Big Whale arena in Wakayama, Japan, at last month’s Shima Seiki 50th Anniversary Celebration, was the Spring 2013 collection of a new US based up and coming knitwear brand called Kotoba.
I used to love clubbing in London: when I first moved to the UK my life revolved around the weekend, preparing for the big night out, planning what to wear, where to go... All that seems a very distant memory now and something I'm not entirely proud of, but my desire to always wear something original and very personal pushed me to take up a sewing class, which then progressed into a foundation, a degree, and then an MA course.
Leading German flat knitting machine builder Stoll is giving new life to an ancient method of embellishing fabrics with the introduction of its Stoll-devoré knit© technique for flat knitting.
“Interfilière's reputation is beyond doubt,” says the show’s organiser Eurovet. “The trade show, a powerful ally for designers, collection managers, buyers, trend agencies and the intimates and beachwear industry, will bring them all together in Paris, the fashion capital on 19, 20 and 21 January 2013.”

Filo is always a business show, people get straight to the point.
The latest edition, 10-11th October, in Milan, showed an increase in exhibitors, and business appeared brisk. This was despite lower production figures and higher imports registered in Italy for the sector during 2012.
Now in its third year, The Campaign for Wool, of which HRH Prince of Wales is a patron, is being celebrated on an unprecedented global scale with more countries than ever before creating their own programme of activity to celebrate ‘Wool Week’ around the world – and knitting will play an important role.
As the days grow shorter and the temperature drops, the time has come to wear warmer clothes. In this case, the tights shown below bring a touch of floral splendour to the cool days of autumn.
This article was written by Debra Cobb for our sister site Innovation in Textiles which has a technical textiles focus. However, the ‘fashion fabrics get technical’ message was so powerful and knits featured so heavily, that we thought we would publish it here too...
Fabrics for Autumn/Winter 2013/14 contrasted opulent surfaces and handles with compact density and functional technicity at the September 2012 edition of Première Vision Pluriel in Paris.
Visitor traffic was strong over the first two days of the fair, according to Phillipe Pasquet, CEO and editor-in-chief of Première Vision, calling the opening day “historic, ahead of expectations.” Exhibitors were also pleased with attendance at the fair; Bel Maille’s Stéphane Ziegler commented, “Traffic has been very good with our current customers. As if current economic challenges weren’t enough to cast a pall over last weekend’s Interfilière and Mode City shows for the intimate apparel and swimwear trades, the November-like Parisian weather did its best to dampen spirits. But Interfilière’s mills and suppliers did much more than “keep calm and carry on.” They continue to invest and innovate at an extraordinary rate; with an emphasis on upgrading their fabrics with new fibres and technologies.
