The 32nd edition of the India Knit Fair (IKF), an exclusive International Trade Fair for knitted garments, is opening today in Tirupur.

The fair, which will showcase Spring/Summer Collections for 2012, is being held against the backdrop of an ongoing crisis faced by the knitting industry in Tirupur. About 700 dyeing and bleaching units were recently closed for continuing to discharge effluent into a river violating a Madras High Court's directive.

Mr Arumugam Sakthivel, President of the Tirupur Exporters Association (TEA) said that holding the three day fair is also an attempt to send a signal to overseas buyers that Tirupur is ready to face its challenges.

Mr Sakthivel said that 50 buyers and 75 buying agents had already confirmed their participation in the fair and that another 50 buyers were expected to take part.

Eight buyers from Japan, where the knitting industry is taking steps to promote business, are participating for the first time in the fair, showcasing a variety of textiles from men’s and women’s wear to childrenswear, he added.

The fair is being jointly organised by the Tirupur Exporters Association, the Apparel Export Promotion Council and India Knit Fair Association.
