Report summary

This latest update in our series of reports summarises the trends which were on show at the European yarn fairs for the autumn/winter 2017/18 season.

The author of the report visited Filo, Pitti Immagine Filati and Première Vision Yarns where she interviewed exhibitors and found out first-hand which trends were proving to be the most popular. There was a positive atmosphere at the fairs, due largely to the continuing popularity of knitwear as a high fashion item.

Natural fibres were important, and there was much use of wool and the precious fibres alpaca, cashmere and mohair. Overall, yarns were more finely spun, and had a smoother and cleaner look compared with those on show at the fairs for the autumn/winter 2016/17 season. However, there was also evidence of big, bulky yarns which had been loosely spun, or made from rovings which had been brushed or felted.

Fancy yarns were prominent including bouclé yarns, tape yarns and chainette yarns and many incorporated mixes of colour. Sparkling details were evident, and several spinners had incorporated glossy threads, Lurex or even Swarovski crystals into their yarns.
