The history and success of COMEZ S.p.A. are closely bound to Mr. Luigi Omodeo Zorini, the company’s president and founder.

Following early experiences working at an important knitwear factory in his home town, Mr. Zorini launched his own business back in 1953, starting out as an entrepreneur.

Those were years characterised by hard work and a pioneering and enterprising spirit, years in which Mr. Zorini took his first steps along the road he was to follow in the knitwear machinery industry. It was in the "crochet machinery" sector, more specifically, that he saw the possibility of a truly interesting future - a future linked to the production of edgings and ornamental details for under and outerwear.

His journey, which proved to be long and laborious, was not without its difficulties along the way. However, armed with considerable technical skills and blessed with a touch of good fortune, Mr. Zorini has seen his efforts rewarded over the years: he has taken crochet technology to the highest levels imaginable, and his company, COMEZ, to the very top of its sector internationally.

Mr. Omodeo Zorini has received a number of honours in recognition of his achievements: these include an Honoris Causa degree in Mechanical Engineering conferred on him by the "Universitas Internationalis Studiorum Superiorum Pro Deo" of New York.

The considerable number of patents to his name bear witness to Mr. Zorini’s ability and inventiveness. A self-taught and keen mechanic, he has always worked to ensure the growth of COMEZ, and in this endeavour has certainly been helped by his great passion for, and pride in, his work: both qualities typical of the "old-style" entrepreneur.

Continuously devising new and innovative concepts and ideas, Mr. Luigi Omodeo Zorini remains as ever open to suggestions and ready to implement the requests of all customers, maintaining COMEZ’s position as a leader in the research and development of new machinery and technology.

Company profile

The name COMEZ stands out in the industrial sector of the province of Pavia, and is a global leader in machinery technology for the production of narrow fabrics: "Crochet Knitting Machines", "Weaving Needle Looms" and "Double Needle Bed Warp Knitting Machines".

With over 200 employees, and 85% of its turnover generated by exports, COMEZ boasts tens of thousands of its machines installed in five continents the world over. Thanks to the support of dozens of retail agents and the presence of subsidiaries in the U.S.A., CANADA, the P.R. of CHINA and MEXICO, COMEZ guarantees its global customers efficient, prompt and thorough after sales service.

Modern, functional production facility

The COMEZ production plant and its various departments cover a total surface area of approximately 40,000 sq. metres (including 20,000 sq. m of indoor production space).

At its production workshop, all components for COMEZ machinery are manufactured by highly skilled personnel using the latest and most up-to-date production assembly layout installations, including numerous N/C machines.

Assembly and final test-runs on machines are performed by expertly trained workers in the assembly bay.

The SPARE PARTS DEPARTMENT uses an advanced data processing system to help manage the distribution of thousands of parts. COMEZ guarantees ON TIME DELIVERY OF SPARE PARTS for all machine models anywhere in the world.

Comez over the years

From its modest beginnings as a small business to its present status as a modern industrial entity, the road has been a long and arduous one.

COMEZ was born in the early 1950s when Luigi Omodeo Zorini (the company's present president) started up the family run "COSTRUZIONI MECCANICHE ZORINI" machine shop in Cilavegna, specialising in the production of "Crochet Machines". Zorini recognised that there was great potential for the development of these machines in the production of trimmings for knitted garments, both for under and outerwear. The first machines produced met with considerable success, thanks in no small measure to the skill and ingenuity of their creator.

The latter half of the 1950s was a period characterised by strong economic growth and an overall improvement in living standards. This favourable climate allowed the company to expand its activities, transferring to more suitable premises in Via Nazario Sauro. These production facilities were gradually expanded, becoming by the late 1960s a factory of truly industrial dimensions (over 1,000 sq. m) with several dozen employees.

Recognising the importance of building up an efficient sales network, the company signed an agency agreement with the Milan firm of Rimoldi, thereby increasing exposure for COMEZ machinery and extending their presence to markets the world over.

The markets reacted well, and the company continued to expand: in 1968 the production installations were moved to a building covering 5,000 sq. m in Viale Industria, and in 1974 the company was turned into a S.p.A. (joint stock company).

During this time, special emphasis was placed on improving the quality of production processes, implementing more up-to-date organisational models and introducing new processing machines.
