The second edition of the International Conference on Natural Fibre – From Science to Market (ICNF2015) that will be taking place from 27-29 April 2015 on São Miguel Island, in Azores, Portugal, is accepting extended abstracts of two full pages until 30 October this year, organisers have announced.

The conference is expected to attract over 300 participants to this scientific event, which aims to be a meeting point for everyone interested in natural fibres.

Natural fibres

Natural fibres are a renewable resource, and they are said to have carbon neutrality, because they absorb the same amount of carbon dioxide they produce. During the processing, they generate waste, mostly organic, which can be used to generate electricity or green building, and at the end of its life cycle, it is 100% biodegradable.

Natural fibre have seen greatly enlarged its range of applications due to the intensive technical and scientific research undertaken by various institutes around the world, turning these materials into an alternative for many situations in engineering, medicine, sports, architecture, design, and more.

The path of the revaluation of natural fibre goes through the improvement of its production sectors, the continuous deepening of scientific knowledge in this area, new marketing strategies and indelibly, the generation of products based on natural fibre.

Programme topics

Following up the success of ICNF2013 held in Guimarães, Portugal, focusing on the topic ‘Sustainable materials for advanced applications’, next year’s ICNF2015 is devoted to the topic ‘From nature to market’.

The conference topics next year include:

  • New efficient and cost effective processes for natural fibre extraction and processing;
  • Innovative natural fibre;
  • Functional natural fibre;
  • Natural fibre modification techniques;
  • Advanced fibrous structures based on natural fibre;
  • Nanodimensional natural fibre (nanocellulose);
  • Natural fibre based polymeric composites;
  • Greencomposites, and more.

Natural Fibrenamics Award 2015

After the success of the first edition of the Natural Fibrenamics Award, this event is again included in the ICNF2015 programme, to award the best innovative products in the field of natural fibre.

The innovative product applications will be shown during the conference in a special showroom and evaluated by a selected jury in terms of innovation, design and functionality.

The contest intends to be a showcase of the latest innovations in the field of natural fibre, both for the scientific and industrial communities.
