Birla Cellulose, the cellulosic fibres business of the Aditya Birla Group, has once again reaffirmed its leadership in sustainable sourcing and forest conservation by earning the prestigious Dark Green Shirt rating for the sixth consecutive year in Canopy’s Hot Button Report 2025.

The annual Hot Button Report is an internationally recognised benchmark that evaluates the environmental performance of man-made cellulosic fibre producers, with a particular focus on forest protection, transparency, and next-generation solutions. The Dark Green Shirt represents the highest possible category, acknowledging producers that demonstrate excellence in sustainability and innovation.

“Receiving Canopy’s Dark Green Shirt for the sixth year in a row reaffirms our leadership in sustainable sourcing and NextGen innovations,” said Vadiraj Kulkarni, Business Head of Birla Cellulose. “We remain dedicated to advancing circular solutions and collaborating with partners to protect ancient and endangered forests while delivering high-performance, nature-positive fibres to the global textile industry.”

Nicole Rycroft, Founder and Executive Director of Canopy, congratulated the company for its continued leadership. “Since the inception of the Hot Button in 2016, Birla has been a leader in the MMCF sector. With opportunities to significantly increase their use of Next Gen inputs and their focus on scaling circular alternatives, we are optimistic about them continuing to lead the industry in future editions of the Hot Button Report.”

The Hot Button Report has become the primary reference for fashion brands and retailers seeking responsible sourcing partners in the man-made cellulosic fibre sector. More than 550 global brands, representing over US$1 trillion in annual revenues, now prioritise sourcing from ‘green shirt’ producers committed to protecting biodiversity and eliminating deforestation risks in their supply chains.

Birla Cellulose operates 11 manufacturing sites for pulp and fibre production, all of which employ closed-loop technologies that minimise resource use and emissions. Supported by five advanced research centres, the company produces fibres from renewable wood sources, using environmentally efficient processes that conserve energy and water. Through collaboration with partners across its value chain, Birla Cellulose continues to scale its impact and advance sustainability in global textiles.
