Fabric collections from two of Italy’s most respected companies, both made using high-tech yarns derived from end-of-life tyres, will be presented at the upcoming Milano Unica trade show.

Pontetorto, a Tuscan textile group known for its sport and fashion garments, and Luxury Jersey, a Lombardy-based manufacturer that specialises in fabrics knitted from high-quality fibres, once again confirm their choice of Fulgar’s green portfolio and embrace the Q-CYCLE project by Fulgar, promoting the circular economy in the textile industry.

The revolutionary yarn is the result of pyrolysis, an innovative chemical recycling technology – part of the BASF ChemCycling process and Fulgar yarn-making technology – that makes it possible to recover a precious eco-sustainable fibre from end-of-life tyres, one of the most polluting materials and one of the most difficult to dispose of on a global level. In Europe alone, 1.37 million tonnes of tyres (40% of the total produced) are incinerated every year, producing high levels of CO2 emissions.

In the words of Alan Garosi, Fulgar’s head of marketing: “Our green programme is in constant development, always targeting the latest frontier of sustainability. Q-CYCLE, the result of a collaboration with BASF, enables us to construct values for our brand and partners, embodying the excellence of Made in Italy products.”

“This innovation has huge potential, and in a not-too-distant future it could also enable us to recycle pre- and post-production waste from the textile industry, making the production process entirely circular within the same supply chain. We’re pleased that our commitment has been acknowledged by such high-quality partners as Pontetorto and Luxury Jersey. Like us, they have chosen to promote quality and a culture of sustainability in the textile industry,” continued Garosi.

Q-CYCLE is an innovative polyamide with all the functional and aesthetic benefits of a virgin polyamide – lightness, cling and resistance – with a green plus. An ideal yarn for producing high-quality, eco-sustainable fabrics that are a perfect solution for the worlds of luxury sport and fashion.

“For us, the transition towards a sustainable fabric supply chain is a primary objective,” says Marco Toccafondi, head of the Pontetorto sport line. “It’s a concrete commitment that brings us closer to supply chain companies like Fulgar that are orientated towards innovation and constant research. The Q-Cycle project immediately appealed to us because of its extraordinary ability to use sophisticated technology to transform objects like tyres that have a devastating effect on the environment into a high-quality virgin product that enables us to make fabrics dedicated to the world of luxury activewear.”

Federico Boselli, founder and general manager of Luxury Jersey, comments: ”Our collaboration with Fulgar is renewed every season and widens to include new opportunities that enable us to create collections of high-quality fabrics that are genuinely sustainable. The commitment we have taken on is to make fabrics that respond to the requirements of eco-designers and will appeal to clients who are generating an increasing demand for garments that combine high performance, fashion and low environmental impact.”
