Spinnova, the Finnish textile fibre innovator, has updated its corporate strategy following the decision by Brazilian pulp giant Suzano not to invest further in their collaboration. The shift, first signalled in February 2025, aims to enhance the cost efficiency of Spinnova’s unique fibre production technology and accelerate its commercial scaling.
The company is now focused on reducing production and investment costs through continued development of its fibre concept. To support this, Spinnova plans to establish an international consortium of partners centred on its acquisition of Woodspin and Suzano Finland. These assets include a demonstration factory and micro fibrillated cellulose refining operations, now poised to come under full ownership by Spinnova.
“We have received confirmation from textile value chain operators that the properties of Spinnova’s fibre are already sufficient for selected commercial applications. However, fibre production costs are currently too high,” said Janne Poranen, CEO of Spinnova. “For this reason, we will focus in particular on reducing production and investment costs.”
Poranen confirmed that partner recruitment is underway, with the international consortium designed to speed up the scale-up of the company’s patented technology.
Spinnova’s updated priorities for 2025–2026 include advancing cost competitiveness of its production methods, enhancing fibre characteristics for both textile and non-textile applications, and continuing raw material research using wood-based and other cellulosic sources. A major part of the new strategy includes supporting the Respin joint venture with ECCO, which aims to commercialise leather waste-based fibre solutions.
Additionally, the company is targeting €500,000 in annual savings through site consolidation in Jyväskylä, Finland. Financial guidance for 2025 and 2026 will not be provided.
Spinnova’s technology converts wood pulp and various waste materials into textile fibre without harmful chemicals or dissolving processes. The resulting fibre is biodegradable, recyclable, and manufactured with low CO₂ emissions and water usage, presenting a sustainable alternative to conventional materials.
