Technical Textiles

Myant Inc., the Toronto based pioneers in textile computing, and Osmotex AG, Zurich, the developer of Hydrobot and Steriliser technologies, have partnered to bring new technology, standards, and innovation to the rapidly evolving ‘textile computing’ sector.  The partnership aims to enable advancements in healthcare active membrane applications of wound care management.

Unlike traditional passive textiles and membranes, the technology provides active electronically driven moisture transport - working regardless of climatic conditions, and offering practically unlimited transport, at a fraction of the energy needed for evaporation. A very small electric voltage (less than 1 Volt) is applied.

Applications for the partnership

Early HYDRO_BOT products entered the market at the end of 2018, after intensive development and testing by Osmotex in collaboration with textile industry partners, professional testers at the Salzburg University, and the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Material Science and Technology (EMPA).

While first applications were in outdoor clothing, healthcare and medical related applications are currently under development.  Coupled with the Steriliser technology’s ability to disinfect textiles from within, the textile could for instance keep wounds both dry and clean. In the future, advanced functions such as controlled release of medication, filtering of bacteria/proteins, and monitoring of replacement need for wound dressings can be enabled.

Myant creates textiles that can sense and react to biomarkers and environmental stimuli, transforming everyday clothing and other fabrics into bidirectional interfaces to the physiological systems of the body. The plurality of biomarkers that can be captured via textile computing opens up new possibilities for innovation in the field of wound management and care.

The primary focus of Myant's research, development, and clinical studies in recent years has been cardiovascular disease monitoring and management through their Textile Computing   technologies and the companion virtual clinic for remote patient monitoring (RPM). Myant is working to decentralize health care services through accessible and digitized textile interfaces around the user, rather than around conventional healthcare facilities. The aim is to enable and empower users to utilize technology as a companion throughout their health and healing journey.

Together with Myant’s Textile Computing and virtual clinic, HYDRO_BOT and Osmotex Steriliser will play an important role in advancing and expanding the service offering that can be made through textiles. This emphasizes the role that textiles will have in the future of healthcare and other industries.

Myant has created the world’s first platform that continuously and ambiently connects people to their bodies, to each other, and to the world around them. Using Textile Computing that can sense and react to the human body and a platform that enables machine learning driven health and performance outcomes, Myant is on a mission to transform human connectedness. With an extensive patent portfolio, key exclusive relationships within the textile computing industry, a multidisciplinary team of researchers, engineers, data scientists, fashion designers and knitting specialists, and over 80,000 ft² of manufacturing capacity, Myant is changing the way people across society connect and how healthcare is administered.
