Gildan Activewear has finalised its acquisition of HanesBrands, marking the start of a new phase of expansion for the Canadian apparel manufacturer. Announced on 1 December 2025, the transaction significantly increases the company’s global scale and strengthens its position across the activewear and innerwear markets.
Glenn J. Chamandy, President and Chief Executive Officer of Gildan, described the acquisition as a transformative milestone, noting that it combines two portfolios of widely recognised brands with Gildan’s vertically integrated, low-cost production model. He said the enlarged business will act as a powerful engine for innovation and growth, enabling Gildan to serve customers more effectively while delivering long-term value for shareholders.
The company’s immediate priority is to ensure a smooth integration of HanesBrands’ operations. Gildan expects to realise at least US$200 million in run-rate cost synergies, a target outlined when the acquisition was first announced in August 2025. These benefits are expected to arise from combining supply chains, optimising production networks and leveraging shared capabilities across regions.
Gildan is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of everyday apparel, producing activewear, underwear, socks and intimates for wholesale distributors, screenprinters, retailers and e-commerce platforms. Its portfolio includes brands such as Gildan, Hanes, Comfort Colors, American Apparel, AllPro, GoldToe, Peds, Bali, Playtex, Maidenform, Bonds and Champion, the latter under an exclusive printwear licence in the United States and Canada.
The company operates large-scale, vertically integrated facilities across Central America, the Caribbean, North America and Asia, and emphasises strong labour, environmental and governance practices throughout its supply chain as part of its long-term ESG strategy.
By bringing HanesBrands into its structure, Gildan aims to build a more resilient and competitive business capable of meeting global market demands while supporting responsible manufacturing.
