Report summary
A new report from Textiles Intelligence provides an in-depth assessment of global trends in fibre prices, production and consumption, with a particular focus on developments in natural and man-made fibres. The analysis covers recent performance as well as medium- and long-term forecasts, offering valuable insight for companies operating across the global textiles and apparel supply chain.
The report shows that global production of man-made fibres increased in 2024, driven largely by growth in synthetic fibres. Polyester accounted for most of this expansion, underlining its continued dominance within the man-made fibre sector. At the same time, there was also a healthy rise in the production of cellulosic fibres, reflecting ongoing investment and capacity expansion in this segment.
In contrast, production of natural fibres declined in 2024 to its lowest level for several years. This fall was primarily the result of reduced cotton production, which continues to face structural and cyclical challenges. Looking ahead, the report forecasts that global man-made fibre production will continue to rise between 2025 and 2030, reaching an estimated 79% of total global fibre production by the end of the period.
For cotton, the outlook is more subdued. Global cotton fibre production is expected to fall during the 2025/26 season, while consumption is also forecast to decline, reflecting uncertainty linked to geopolitical tensions and weakening consumer demand. Nevertheless, cotton prices are predicted to remain relatively stable, which should help to keep consumption close to the level recorded in the 2024/25 season.
In addition to its analysis of production trends, the report includes forecasts of cotton fibre demand, supply and prices for the 2025/26 season, as well as projections for man-made fibre production through to 2030.
