Kayser-Roth Corporation, a major marketer of hosiery and intimates products in the United States, is expanding its manufacturing facilities with up to US 28 million being invested into its Burlington and Asheboro, USA operations, with construction expected to start soon.

Kayser-Roth’s hosiery and legwear band ‘No nonsense’ is partnering with Wal-Mart, a multinational retail corporation, in attempt to promote local growth and expand the Made in America programme.

US hosiery market

According to several market studies, the hosiery market in the US has been declining over the past few years, with the revenue falling at an average annual rate of 6.3% for the last five years to 2012.

This may be seen as a result of the decreasing demand for socks and other types of legwear, partially due to the increased durability of hosiery and changing lifestyle and fashion trends, forcing the US manufacturers to move their production offshore to low-cost countries.

However, the year 2012 saw an increase in volume and current value sales of hosiery in the US by 1% and 2% respectively. The US manufacturing sector grew last month at its fastest pace in more than two years, with the Institute for Supply Management's (ISM) index of national factory activity rising to 55.7 in August from 55.4 the month before.

Kick starting the market

The Kayser-Roth Corporation, headquartered in Greensboro, NC, operates four plants in North Carolina and Tennessee and according to the company  95% of its legwear products are made in the USA.

The group sells ‘No nonsense’ panties, leggings, tights, pantyhose, socks, sleepwear and foot comfort products and also produces HUE socks, legwear and intimate apparel for major department and specialty stores, in addition to producing Timberland Casual Socks, Calvin Klein hosiery, PrimaSport, Burlington Hosiery and Burlington Socks.

The construction of the new production sites in North Carolina, is expected to produce 100 jobs and boost local economy. ‘No nonsense’, one of the most recognisable apparel brands in America today with more than 30 years experience in hosiery, will partner the Wal-Mart to support the in-house manufacturing.
