The Joint Apparel Association Forum (JAAF) has reported that Sri Lanka’s apparel exports in August 2025 fell slightly compared to the same month last year, while cumulative exports for the first eight months showed steady growth.
Exports in August reached US$ 479.14 million, marking a 1.33% year-on-year decline. Shipments to the United States edged up by 0.92%, while exports to the European Union and United Kingdom fell by 4.83% and 2.6% respectively. Exports to other destinations remained unchanged.
Despite the August decline, overall performance between January and August 2025 remained positive, with total apparel exports rising 7.48% to US$ 3.39 billion, up from US$ 3.16 billion during the same period in 2024. Growth was led by the EU, which recorded a 14.66% increase, followed by the USA (2.58%), the UK (4.54%) and other markets (9.45%).
“The month of August reflects the volatility in global markets, with pressure on exports to the EU and UK. However, our year-to-date performance demonstrates resilience, particularly with strong growth into the EU. The industry continues to face challenges, but remains focused on competitiveness, diversification, and sustained engagement with key trading partners,” JAAF said in its statement.
JAAF reiterated its commitment to working alongside policymakers and stakeholders to safeguard Sri Lanka’s apparel sector and position it to capture new opportunities in an unpredictable global environment.
