Scottish manufacturer Robert Mackie of Scotland has acquired its Stewarton mill from the Mackie family, the original owners of the business. Founded in 1845, Mackie is one of the UK’s longest-established knitwear manufacturers, recognised for its hats, scarves and gloves made exclusively from natural fibres. For nearly two centuries, the company has maintained direct control over production to safeguard the quality and durability of its products.

Today, Mackie continues to manufacture entirely under one roof at its Ayrshire mill, with knitting, washing and finishing all carried out on site. This integrated approach allows close oversight at every stage of production and ensures consistent standards across its knitwear ranges.

The mill is located in Stewarton, historically known as the “Bonnet Toun” for its role in Scottish headwear production. Mackie formed part of this tradition, producing Glengarry and Balmoral bonnets alongside other practical knitwear. While the collection has evolved over time, the focus has remained on functional, well-made garments designed for long-term use rather than seasonal replacement.

When Managing Director Graeme Haddow acquired the business in 2015, ownership of the building remained with the Mackie family. The recent purchase of the Stewarton mill secures the site for the business, reinforcing its long-term commitment to the town, supporting the local workforce and enabling continued investment within the community.

The acquisition reflects Mackie’s broader sustainability strategy. The company works primarily with wool and other natural fibres selected for their performance, longevity and comfort. By keeping production in one location and relying on an experienced in-house workforce, Mackie reduces transport requirements, limits waste and preserves specialist manufacturing skills.

People remain central to the business. Many employees have developed their expertise through years of hands-on experience, often working alongside family members or long-standing colleagues. This continuity supports consistency in the finished products and allows for gradual refinement rather than constant change.

The company is led by Graeme Haddow, who joined Mackie in 2002 and became Managing Director in 2009. With a background in accountancy and manufacturing, he acquired the business in 2015 with a focus on steady investment in both machinery and people, guided by long-term sustainability rather than rapid expansion.

Mackie’s knitwear is supplied through a curated network of independent retailers across the UK, Europe and worldwide, with partnerships based on shared values around craftsmanship and responsible production.

The acquisition of the Stewarton mill marks a significant milestone, preserving the company’s established manufacturing approach while providing a stable foundation for its future.
