Woolmark has partnered with COLOURizd to launch QuantumCOLOUR, a sustainable dry textile colouring process set to transform the wool industry. This innovative method significantly reduces water and chemical use while delivering durable, vibrant results on Merino wool and wool blends.

Unlike traditional dyeing methods that use up to 120 litres of water and a cocktail of chemicals per kilogram of yarn, the QuantumCOLOUR process requires just 0.5 litres. It avoids pre-treatment and bleaching, operating without wastewater discharge and relying only on a wetting agent and a bluesign-certified pigment binder.

Julie Davies, General Manager of Processing Innovation and Education Extension at Woolmark, said: “After extensive testing on Merino wool and wool blends, we realised the team at COLOURizd is on to something truly revolutionary. The QuantumCOLOUR process enables a broad tonal spectrum, from faded to saturated, while minimising environmental impact. Its extremely low water usage means that suppliers no longer require extensive wastewater treatment infrastructure to colour yarns.”

Validated across various yarn counts, from 30/2NM to 80/1NM, and on fibres including 100% Merino wool, cotton, Tencel and nylon blends, the technology has been tested by authorised laboratories. Results confirm strong colourfastness and durability at the yarn, fabric and garment levels.

Jennifer Thompson, CEO of COLOURizd, added: “Woolmark represents the gold standard in the wool industry, and their involvement is key to expanding our process into new markets. Our technology is already in use with brands like Wrangler, Lee, Cone Denim and GANT. This collaboration will allow us to offer high-performance, low-impact solutions to wool manufacturers globally.”

The QuantumCOLOUR process injects pigment directly into the yarn fibre bundle, removing the need for traditional wet finishing. This enables the creation of supple textures and a diverse colour palette, aligning with the global push for more responsible fashion manufacturing.

Woolmark and COLOURizd will present the QuantumCOLOUR process at Pitti Immagine Filati in Florence from 1–3 July 2025 at booth I/20. Appointments can be made by emailing [email protected].
