Engineering group Andritz has announced a new collaboration with Philadelphia-based biotech company Tandem Repeat Technologies to advance large-scale production of Procell, a next-generation sustainable fibre for use in textiles and nonwovens.

The partnership unites Tandem Repeat’s biotechnology expertise with Andritz’s long-standing know-how in nonwovens and manmade cellulosic fibre machinery. Together, the companies aim to establish commercial-scale manufacturing processes for Procell, a patented protein-based fibre designed to deliver both performance and sustainability.

Procell is produced through biomanufacturing using proteins, offering a unique combination of wool-like softness, high strength, and long-lasting durability. Its versatility opens opportunities across apparel, home textiles, and technical applications.

“We see huge potential in Procell as a truly innovative sustainable material,” said Sergey Malkov, Vice President of manmade cellulosic fibres at Andritz. “Our collaboration with Tandem Repeat will help accelerate its path to market.”

Tandem Repeat co-founder Melik Demirel added: “Working with Andritz enables us to scale our revolutionary fibre and provide industries with new options for sustainable production and resilient supply chains.”
