Report summary

The fairs were held in a positive spirit, and there was a feeling that trade had begun to improve after being heavily impacted in 2020 by the COVID-19 pandemic. Fancy fabrics, especially fancy fabrics decorated with metallic fibres and embellishments, were plentiful, reflecting the general spirit of the trends for the autumn/winter 2022/23 season.

Indeed, the season is forecast to be particularly colourful compared with previous seasons and eccentric and psychedelic print and pattern designs looks set to be widely embraced. There was a strong focus at the fairs on environmental sustainability, and plant-based materials were especially important. Also, there was an emphasis on linen fabrics and fabrics made using fibres derived from banana, pineapple and agricultural waste.

Another key trend at the fairs was that of antiviral and antibacterial fabrics, which has been driven by an increase in consumer demand for such fabrics throughout the duration of the COVID-19 pandemic. Exhibitors at the fairs agreed that awareness of antiviral and antibacterial fabrics had been brought to the forefront as a result of the pandemic and this had driven manufacturers to pursue innovation on a large scale.
