Following the release of knitting data for nine different Face Coverings by Shima Seiki in Japan during April, subsidiary company Shima Seiki Europe has prepared a Technical Pack with knit data, and yarn and finishing information for its customers.

The Technical Pack will enable the manufacture of Face Coverings on Shima Seiki NSSR and NSVR machines, as well as the company’s previous machine series in gauges 12, 14 and 16.  All of the Face Coverings are knitted three dimensionally and in one piece, including ear straps, with no additional sewing required after knitting.  The same knitting data is available for Shima Seiki WHOLEGARMENT and WHOLEGARMENT ‘Mini’ accessories machines.

The Face Coverings can be knitted either in 1 or 2 colours, enabling patterning or branding, such as a company name or logo. An integral ‘pocket’ is also knitted in for the insertion of a nose clip to provide a snug fit around the bridge of the nose when the covering is worn.  Shima Seiki Europe has chosen a Viscose/Polyester yarn blend that feels cool to the touch, has stretch properties and a high knitted fabric density.  The final fabric is not bulky and so is comfortable to wear.

“If required an additive can be applied to the knitted Face Covering when it is scoured and softened, giving it antibacterial functionality. Durability testing has also been completed,” the company says. “Both the yarn and finishing chemicals are sourced from well-known brands based in Europe, providing a fast and reliable delivery route and fantastic quality assurance.  The Face Coverings can be washed and re-worn as required.”

“We have also taken advantage of our Apex 3D software to create a virtual simulated image of the Face Covering that can be used to prepare patterning ideas to share with customers before any knitting has to be completed.  The final images can be emailed to customers in PDF format so everything can be agreed without the need for the customer to visit the factory.”

“We have completed this work with the aim of helping to support our customers at this very difficult time for the knitwear industry, and as such the Technical Pack will include both the knitting and 3D Face Covering virtual simulation data.”

Please note that these Face Coverings are not for use in front line hospital or care home settings.
