The Italian spinning industry in 2006-2007

After the major setbacks during the five year period from 2001-2005 when the Italian spinning industry’s turnover dropped by nearly 30%, last year the industry’s sales (including intra-industry and marketing) stabilized – almost (- 0.6%). Industry sales settled at just about 3.4 billion euros (Table 1) accounting for roughly 6.5% of the total of Italian textile-fashion sales and the figure rises to 15.5% if we consider only the “upstream” sections of the chain.

These results were possible thanks to the slight increase in the wool business (+0-6%) that was able to partly offset the new decreases in sales that characterized cotton (-3.9%) and mainly linen (- 10.9%) production. The production balance (that is the sales net of income from sales of imported goods) was negative for the fifth consecutive year: down 2.8% with respect to 2005 with a cumulative decrease of more than 33% when compared to 2001.
