As industrial knitting embraces new technologies, materials, and applications, the demand for professionals fluent in both design and engineering continues to rise. According to Athens Knit Lab, a contemporary knit design and development studio based in Athens, Greece and founded in 2019, universities often fail to provide the necessary technical education, leaving graduates without practical experience in knitting machines, programming, or troubleshooting.
This educational gap creates a significant disconnect, limiting innovation across the knitwear industry. Companies are left with two choices - invest in training new hires or accept inefficiencies as employees learn through trial and error.
With a family history in knitting there was a heart-driven calling for us to create a contemporary knit lab in Athens with the aim to connect new technologies with craftsmaking to bring a fresh vision to traditional knitting
Athens Knit Lab has steadily evolved into a vital hub for textile students, teachers, fashion designers, programmers, footwear specialists, and researchers from colleges and universities. Founder insights highlight that, historically, knowledge within the knitting sector has not been easily shared - a challenge that persists today. However, Athens Knit Lab firmly believes that knowledge sharing fosters innovation and drives the industry forward.
The Athens Knit Lab team’s diverse skillset enables it to merge creativity, artistry and strong technical experience to create memorable knitted products.
